Surprising Statement About Botulinum Toxin A and Migraines

SURPRISING STATEMENT FROM PRESTIGIOUS MEDICAL CENTER ABOUT BOTULINUM TOXIN A AND MIGRAINES

A researcher from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine stated in a paper published in Headache 2011 June:51(6):980-4 that the placebo effect of using Botulinum Toxin A to treat migraines is so large that these effects are solely responsible for its apparent effectiveness.

This does not surprise me because I have often seen much larger than expected placebo effects in migraine trials, especially those looking at prevention.

This is a pretty strong statement and makes one wonder how this drug ever got approved by the FDA to prevent migraines.

It will be interesting to see the response to this statement made by Dr. Solomon of the Einstein College of Medicine.

Michelle Bachmann – Victorious with MigreLief

Imagine your worst migraine day. Now imagine having to make a decision that may affect the lives of millions of people in America on that same day! It’s a serious concern if you are campaigning for President of the United States.

The extent to which migraines can be seriously debilitating looms as a health issue for Michele Bachmann’s campaign to be a presidential candidate.

Reporters have stated that Bachmann despite the fact that she takes prescription medications, to try to control her migraines, has been hospitalized more than once to get serious episodes under control.

There is no doubt that the migraines of certain sufferers can be extremely debilitating and require hospitalization, where powerful opiate drugs may be injected or administered IV. And as all migraine sufferers know, the side effects and lingering after effects of these medications can be just as debilitating.

Thomas Jefferson, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, all suffered from migraines and were in positions of power that required tremendous decision making under pressure all performed at notable levels.

One could suggest that a bad migraine that only happens occasionally it not as problematic as a really bad back that is always gnawing away at your thoughts.

On the other hand, to be considered a chronic migraineur, you have to have 15 or more headache days a month. One could argue, that if you are compromised with pain more than 1/2 of the time, that it could very well detract from you effectiveness as a decision maker.

The frequency and intensity of Ms. Bachmann’s migraines are legitimate concerns when it comes to someone being in the most powerful decision making position in the world.

Preventative measures, such as MigreLief, could be the perfect answer to Ms. Bachmann’s problem. Think of it. One day MigreLief could save the world, lower your taxes and feed the poor…if we believe what the politicians promise!

UNDERSTANDING AND DEALING WITH HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

We normally think of hair loss and men but in actuality, 40% of people dealing with hair loss are women.

I have seen stress, thyroid conditions, medicines and chemotherapy (to name just a few) cause hair loss, which most of the time is reversible.

Your body needs the proper and adequate nutritional building blocks to grow healthy hair and skin.
For any of you challenged with bothersome hair loss, I suggest the following:

1- Eating organic fruits and vegetables
2- Taking a daily multiple vitamin supplement
3- Supplementing with 10 mg. of biotin, a B-vitamin, per day
4- Scalp massages to enhance blood flow
5- Eat enough protein – at least 70 grams/day
6- Consume iodized salt – low thyroid often contributes to thinning hair
7- Balance your hormones – too much testosterone and too little estrogen can cause hair loss, women who suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) experience this.

Pain Medication May Worsen Migraine Diagnosis

Migraine sufferers who average 15 or more headache days a month for each of the past 3 months are considered chronic and those who average 14 or less a month are considered episodic, clearly this somewhat is arbitrary.

Just how differently should someone at 14 days a month be treated versus someone at 15 days a month?  Recent research is indicating that overuse of pain medications is causing episodic sufferers to become chronic sufferers (their total number of monthly headache days actually increases).

Continuous, long term use of pain medications is not a solution. The need to calm the hyper excited migraine brain and maintain healthy, normal, cerebrovascular tone and function is the solution.

Migraines and Menopause

It is often said that migraine frequency will drop as women enter menopause, but nothing about migraines is ever clear and simple.

A recent study presented in Lisbon at The European Neurological Society found that certain women as they approach menopause do experience an improvement in their migraines, but other women can find their migraines either start at menopause or worsen. The researchers found that women, whose migraines were closely tied to their menstrual cycle during their fertile years, had a better chance (but by no means certain) of seeing their migraines improve or even stop with menopause.

Certain Pain Killers May Increase Risk of Heart Irregularity

Many chronic migraine sufferers use a lot of pain killers in an attempt to manage their headaches.

A recent study from Denmark indicates that painkillers, like Advil, Motrin, Naprosyn, Aleve and the prescription drug Celebrex, may significantly increase the risk of an electrical irregularity of your heart beat, known as atrial fibrillation.

Though preliminary, this study adds to the list of concerns about using these drugs too often, which is often the case with people who suffer from chronic pain conditions like migraines or arthritis.

BENEFITS OF MIGRAINES?

Could there possibly be benefits to getting migraines?

We don’t know if this will help you to feel better during your next migraine, but migraine sufferers are much less susceptible to breast cancer. A study published in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention- in 2009, found that migraine sufferers are 26% less likely to get breast cancer.

What we do know will make you feel better is not getting migraines in the first place. For those of you new to the MigreLief community, remember, MigreLief is all about PREVENTION. We believe in stopping the pain before it starts!

Sweetener Sucralose/Splenda – A Migraine Trigger

A case report about a woman whose migraines were being triggered by the artificial sweetener  Sucralose/Splenda was published by the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, dept. of  neurology.

When the physicians withdrew the sucralose her migraines stopped and when they reintroduced it, they  began again.

If you look carefully at the labels of low calorie drinks and foods you will find sucralose in many of them.  It is not yet clear if sucralose serves as a trigger for lots of migraine sufferers.  Only time will tell.

Interestingly, this woman also reported menstrual migraines that were caused by her birth control pills. When the physicians switched from a fixed estrogen birth control medicine to a triphasic, her menstrual migraines improved significantly.

If you are on birth control pills and feel that they may be contributing to your migraine headaches, speak to your doctor about possibly switching to a different one.

New Warning of Botox Dangers

Company Marketing Botox Loses 212 Million Lawsuit Over Side-Effects

Most people are probably familiar with the use of Botox whereby it is injected to reduce frown lines, and reduce muscle stiffness. Other people who suffer with migraines may be familiar with the suggested use of  Botox to prevent migraines.
Should you ever decide to use Botox, you should discuss the potential side-effects with your physician.
A jury in Virginia has awarded a man who used injected Botox to reduce stiffness in his fingers,  $212 million dollars because it was found that the Botox caused him brain damage.
This implies that the Botox migrated from his fingers to other parts of his body and may have caused an autoimmune reaction. This of course would be of concern to people who have the Botox injected into their foreheads.
For chronic migraine sufferers, the risk and expense of trying Botox should be weighed against proven natural and safe options for migraine prevention.

New Dangers of Prescription Migraine Meds

OVER USE OF ANTI-MIGRAINE MEDCIATIONS IS COMMON AND MAY CAUSE PERMANENT PAINFUL CHANGES TO NERVES

We have written about the medical phenomenon referred to as “Medication Over-Use Headache” (MOH) in previous articles.

In patients who over use either Over-The-Counter drugs like aspirin, Excedrin, motrin or prescription drugs like Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax, an increase in the number of migraines experienced every month, occurs.  This is also referred to a “rebound headache”.

Now, researchers have found that actual changes in the sensitivity of your nerves to migraine triggers may occur in patients that are over-using their anti-migraine drugs in an attempt to treat their constant pain.

Researchers of the department of pharmacology at the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona, report that, even after discontinuing the over-use of anti-migraine medications, long-lasting effects continue.

These effects include a decreased ability to withstand migraine triggers and  therefore and increased pain response to these triggers and significantly increased numbers of migraines and an increase in the painful intensity of each new migraine.

It is becoming very clear, that a lifetime of treating migraine pain with either over-the-counter medications of prescription drugs, is not a permanent solution and in fact, can sometimes make the migraine problem worse.
