[Study] Migraines May Not Negatively Affect the Brain

While some previously published studies have suggested that migraines with auras may increase the risk of stroke and seemingly harmless brain lesions, it was undetermined if migraines increased the risk of dementia or cognitive function.

An online study published by the British Medical Journal, stated that researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that migraine sufferers did not have a greater risk for cognitive decline than non-migraine sufferers.

If this study is correct, and is supported by future studies with the same findings, this is good news for those of you who suffer with chronic migraines.

The researchers studied the records of over 6000 women who reported on migraines from the records of almost 40,000 women who took part in the Women’s Health Study.

These women established baseline migraine information and were then followed up with cognitive testing over several years. The women were classified either with:

It turned out that women with migraines, regardless of whether or not they were preceded or accompanied by an aura, had no greater risk of cognitive decline than women who never had migraines.

Is There an Association Between Migraines and Erectile Dysfunction?

A study done in Taiwan and published in the journal Cephalalgia indicates that men who suffer with migraines may have an increased risk of experiencing erectile dysfunction.

The researchers studied the records of one million patients and intentionally excluded men with conditions that are known to cause erectile dysfunction like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Interestingly, where one might think that the risk would be highest in older men, the researchers found the highest risk for ED to occur in men with migraines between the ages of 30-39. I find this surprising because this age group of men is usually amongst the lowest percentage-wise for experiencing ED.

This leads one to believe the migraine hypothesis expressed by the Taiwanese researchers and furthermore, it corroborates previous research stating that chronic pain in general, seems to increase the risk of ED.

It would be interesting if future migraine studies looking at medicines that prevent migraines, helped male patients in the study who also had ED.

Butterbur and Migraine Warning From Web MD

BUTTERBUR AND MIGRAINE WARNING: If You’re Considering Taking Butterbur for Migraines, Read This Web MD Warning

Some butterbur products may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), and that’s the major safety concern.

PAs can damage the liver, lungs, and blood circulation, and possibly cause cancer. Butterbur products that contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are UNSAFE when taken by mouth or applied to broken skin. Broken skin allows chemicals to be absorbed into the body. Do not use butterbur products unless they are certified and labeled as free of PAs.
butterbur

Short-term treatment with Butterbur

PA-free butterbur products are considered POSSIBLY SAFE  when taken short-term, by mouth appropriately. PA-free root extracts seem to be safe when used for up to 16 weeks in adults. There is some evidence that a specific PA-free butterbur extract (Petadolex, Weber&Weber, GmbH & Co, Germany) can be safely used in children who are 6-17 years old for up to 4 months.

Not enough is known about the safety of using PA-free butterbur products on unbroken skin. Don’t use it.

BUTTERBUR SIDE-EFFECTS

PA-free butterbur is generally well tolerated. It can cause belching, headache, itchy eyes, diarrhea, asthma, upset stomach, fatigue, and drowsiness. However, it seems to cause less drowsiness and fatigue than cetirizine (Zyrtec). Butterbur products might cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to ragweed, marigolds, daisies, and other related herbs.

So please consult your doctor before taking Butterbur for migraine treatment.

Migraines in Children Associated with Behavioral Problems

A recently published article in the journal Cephalagia found that children, who suffer from migraines and tension headaches, are much more likely to experience social issues, attention issues, depression and anxiety than children who do not.

The researchers examined the connection between migraines and tension type headaches and behavioral/emotional issues in almost 1,900 children between the ages of 5-11.

child issues migraine

The results indicated that as the number of migraines a child experienced increased, the severity of the emotional issues increased. The children with the tension type headaches also showed similar issues, but they were not as severe.

Other published research supports these findings. Since the severity of the behavioral/emotional issues increased with the number of migraines experienced, it is logical that for children experiencing frequent migraines, parents and physicians should seek low side effect options to prevent and/or decrease as many migraines as possible.

Fortunately there is a proven effective alternative to children suffering a lifetime of migraine pain and abortive – pain relieving medications.

Challenge You to Challenge Your Migraines…

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT YOUR MIGRAINES AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN!

Try MigreLief for 90 days (each bottle is a one month supply.)  We are confident MigreLief will control your migraines and that you will be thrilled with the results which is why we offer a 100% refund of your purchase price if you are not satisfied for any reason after 90 days.

WHY 90 DAYS?

Although many people have experienced positive preventive results in much shorter time, we recommend taking MigreLief for 90 days.  The 90 days is a “build up” period whereby MigreLief’s tripple therapy ingredients build blood levels sufficient to address the underlying nutritional deficiencies,  and imbalances common to many migraine sufferers.  Prevention through addressing dysfunctional brain processes such as vasospasms, blood platelet aggregation and mitochondrial energy deficiencies in the brain cells is MigreLief’s specialty and  key to lifelong migraine relief.

TRIPLE THERAPY APPROACH TO MIGRAINE CONTROL
3 NATURAL MECHANISMS OF ACTION
Working Independently and Together to Keep Migraiens at Bay

  • All 3 ingredients in MigreLief are listed in the American Academy of Neurology Evidence Based Guidelines for Migraine Prevention.MigreLief has been used by over 100,000 migraine sufferers worldwide and is highly recommended by neurologists and leading headache specialists.

Magnesium:

Research studies show that almost half of all migraine sufferers have low blood levels of Magnesium, which is critical in controlling vasospasms (the contraction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which occurs during migraines).  Magnesium is a nutritional supplement with numerous effects that support cerebrovascular tone.

These include:

1) inhibition of platelet aggregation
2) interference with synthesis, release, and action of inflammatory mediators
3) direct alterations of cerebrovascular tone
4) inhibition of vasospasm
5) stabilization of cell membranes.

If magnesium levels fall too low, the vessels supplying blood to the head may “clamp down” inappropriately, hindering blood flow in the head and triggering a migraine. These vessels may become “stuck” in the contracted state, leaving the “pain switch” jammed in the “on” position. Inflammatory substances may be released that heighten pain sensations.

Riboflavin (B-2)

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, has a variety of functions, from aiding in the manufacture of red blood cells to assisting in the extraction of energy from carbohydrates, protein, and fat.  Riboflavin has been known to increase cellular energy production  via tiny “energy factories” in the brain cells called mitochondria.

Riboflavin is a precursor of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). This coenzyme is an important component of the electron-transport chain. A deficiency of mitrochondrial energy reserves has been observed in some persons exhibiting poor cerebrovascular tone. This defect may be corrected by a compound such as riboflavin that improves the activity of the electron-transport chain. MigreLief provides 400mg of Riboflavin, which is significantly higher than most multi-vitamins or B-complex products. Multiple studies have demonstrated that high dose riboflavin can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines in both adults and children.

Of the 3  ingredients in MigreLief, it is the high dose Riboflavin that can take up to 90 days to build blood levels sufficient to decrease migraine risk making it  is a very important part of MigreLief’s Triple Therapy for effective migraine prevention.

Puracol Feverfew:

Commonly recommended for its ability to support cerebrovascular tone, feverfew (Tanacetum Parthenium) is rich in compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones. One of the more important of these compounds may be parthenolide, which represents 85% of the sesquiterpene lactone content in feverfew.

Some scientific studies indicate that while parthenolide may be important there may very well be other phytochemicals in feverfew that are as of yet unidentified and play a role in its effectiveness.

Some studies of extracts of feverfew containing parthenolide yielded no significant benefits. This led researchers to believe that certain of the unidentified phytochemicals may have been left behind during the extraction process. The ideal solution would be a non extracted feverfew product that naturally contained high levels of parthenolide and kept all of the other naturally occurring phytochemicals as well. Thus Puracol Feverfew, AKESO HEALTH SCIENCE’S proprietary non extracted plant source for feverfew with high levels of naturally occurring parthenolide was developed.

Scientific studies have found parthenolide inhibits platelet aggregation and the release of serotonin from platelets and polymorphonuclear leukocyte granules.  It has also been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory prostaglandin synthesis and the release of arachadonic acid.  Each of these phenomena is associated with migraines.

[STUDY] Migraines Have No Long Term Effect On Cognitive Function

Researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital analyzed data of over 6000 women who provided information about their migraine status for up to six years. These women were tested for cognitive performance over the same period. The results of the analysis were published in the respected British Medical Journal.

Though everyone knows that migraines can really be excruciatingly painful, the good news is that, women with migraines, either with or without aura did not have different rates of cognitive decline when compared with women who did not suffer with migraines.

Hopefully, this information indicates that as painful and misunderstood as migraines are, to date, they don’t seem to have deleterious long-term effects on brain/cognitive function.

NOTE:  For those of you who suffer with 4 or more migraines a month, an option that prevents your migraines instead of options that just treat the pain just makes more sense. To learn more about the most successful natural medicine for migraines please go to www.migrelief.com.

“Going with the Flow” When you Have Migraines?

Going with the flow for migraine preventionDoes your life seem fraught with major frustration leading to stress and pain? When you sense an impending headache, does it panic you, or do you become afraid? Are you at a point where it seems you can no longer live a normal life because everything that comes along seems to produce a migraine?

The more we resist something, the more entrenched it becomes. The minute we vow to ourselves that we won’t do a certain thing, or allow ourselves a certain thought pattern, it is almost as if whatever that “certain thing” is takes on a life of its own and nearly becomes entrenched.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna, the Divine, stops time to offer words of strength to his mortal friend, Arjuna, as he stands ready to fight a seemingly unbeatable foe. “My friend,” Krishna says, “Resist what resists in you. Become yourself.” What great words for anyone who wants victory over something, and often migraines can feel like an unbeatable foe. The greatest health comes from being “in the flow.”

We may be survivors, little rebels, and pride ourselves on going “against the flow.” Anything else seems defeatist, apathetic, all those things we’ve learned to abhor. But when that philosophy permeates us to the core, we can set ourselves up for ill health. That seems stra

Are Migraines Disrupting Your Quality of Life?

Prevention is the Answer!

If you or one of your friends is a “prisoner” of chronic migraines, the information in this article could change your life.

1- Is your life or the life of someone you know, governed each month by the fear and anticipation of when the next migraine may occur?

2- Do you miss work because of your migraines?

3- Are your social plans or even vacations often disrupted by painful migraine attacks?

4- Do you take over-the-counter or prescription pain killers many times a month in an attempt to reduce the severe pain of your migraines?

5- Are you sensitive to light or noise?

6- Does your vision, speech or thinking get affected before an attack?

7- Do you find yourself often having to lay down in a dark, quiet room, perhaps even with an ice pack on your temples or forehead?

8- Do you have migraines 3 or more times a month?

9- Are you at the point where you are frustrated and stressed out by your chronic migraines?

If you have answered “yes” to 3 or more of the above questions, then you are most likely an excellent candidate for “Migraine Prevention” options that are proven to be very effective and completely safe.

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO RECLAIM YOUR LIFE AND MAKE MIGRAINES A MUCH MORE MINOR PART OF YOUR LIFE THAN THEY CURRENTLY ARE!

Few physicians or researchers who are experts on migraines would deny that STRESS” is a major factor in the occurrence of migraines.

Recent research from Sweden has demonstrated that certain types of stress reducing exercise was just as effective as a major prescription drug named Topiramate for preventing migraine headaches.

MigreLief, the multi-patented natural medicine that has been used by tens of thousands of chronic migraine sufferers, helps the brain and its arteries to maintain already normal cerebrovascular tone that exists when you are not suffering from a migraine.

Combining the daily use of MigreLief along with the following stress reducing breathing exercise can literally help control your migraines to an extent you may never have thought possible.

breathing exercises

1 – The depth and rate of our breathing respectively decrease and increase when we are stressed. This can deplete oxygen flow to the body and the brain. Please do this breathing exercise exactly as it is described at least 3 times a day:

Blow your breath out through your mouth and then seal your lips. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 10 seconds while expanding your chest. Hold it for 30 seconds while trying to think about “nothing”.

At the end of 30 seconds then slowly expel the breath you were holding, through your lips over a 15 second interval. Notice how your entire body relaxes throughout this breathing exercise especially during the exhalation segment.

Repeat this sequence at least 3 times in a row, working yourself up do doing it 5X in a row, three times a day.

Over time, as your body and brain relax and get used to this very effective breathing technique, you may want to increase the time you breathe in through you nose to 15 seconds, the time you hold your breath to 60 seconds and the time you exhale through your mouth to 30 seconds.

What Migraineurs Can Learn From Olympic Athletes

GOING FOR THE GOLD: What Migraineurs can learn from Olympic Athletes

With the eyes of the entire world on the Olympics, we marvel when we think of the stamina and perseverance it must have taken to win the opportunity to compete at such a level. If you have frequent migraines, you likely can’t imagine what it would be like to persist in anything sustained without being disrupted by pain.

migraineur

How do Olympic athletes manage pain?

Athletes experience pain during their training and competition. Of course, the cause of athletic pain seems as though it would be very different from migraine pain, but is it? It has been shown that when an athlete keeps injuring him or herself, one of two things is happening – either the athlete is not paying attention to something that her body is trying to tell her, or she is somehow resisting the training.

It can be the same for a migraine sufferer. It becomes very frustrating when migraines recur again and again despite much research and effort to treat them. Many times we try various meds and
trigger- elimination strategies to little avail. When that is true, take a step back. Your body is trying to tell you something that you are not hearing. Pain is an excellent warning sign, but when it becomes chronic, it is of no use and actually become destructive.

Here are a few steps that Olympic athletes take to avoid injury and pain. It seems to be very good advice for migraineurs as well.

    1. Be in proper physical condition. For migraineurs, this means right diet and exercise. You don’t have to spend a lot of frustrating energy eliminating dietary triggers if you take the time to research an optimal diet for yourself. Switching to an optimal diet eliminates many triggers and improves your health over all. Optimal diet also means supplementing your body with vitamins and minerals you may be missing. For migraineurs, this can be magnesium and B-vitamins.
    2. Rest. This is two-fold – get adequate sleep every night and relax from stress.
    3. Avoid playing when very tired or in pain. When you have a migraine, or if you have an aura, or are in unavoidable migraine-producing circumstances, stop and rest. Don’t keep going. Stop and readjust your thinking. Rest in a darkened room. Breathe deeply. Meditate. Relax.
    4. Train often. Our bodies were not designed to do well without exercise. Get some kind of concerted exercise every single day. Exercise both with weight for resistance and aerobically. For your aerobic exercise, spend 90 seconds at a moderate pace and then increase to a very challenging pace for 30 seconds. Work up to doing this cycle 6-8 times, 3 days a week.  Learn to exercise the smart way, and be persistent with it.
exercising

Get moving–make an effort to get some kind of exercise in daily!

  1. Go for the gold. Olympic athletes make willing changes in their lifestyle in order to have what they desire. If you desire to rid yourself of the bane of migraines, can you afford to do anything less? Seeking ways to abort the headaches while continuing to do what you’ve always done will simply result in more pain and confusion. The real key is in preventing your pain which requires willingness to implement big changes from how you’ve approached it in the past. MigreLief is an effective supplement which supplies the body with essential nutrients. You deserve to go for the gold—to compete in this race called life without debilitating pain.

FDA Warning: Anti-Depressants and Migraine Prescription Drugs

FDA Warns on Mixing Antidepressants with Migraine Drugs (First released in 2010)

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 20 — Mixing common migraine drugs with antidepressants can trigger a life-threatening condition called serotonin-syndrome, the FDA has warned.

Serotonin-syndrome is characterized by rapid heartbeat, sudden changes in blood pressure, and increased body temperature. Other symptoms include restlessness, hallucinations, loss of coordination, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Options successful at preventing the occurrence of migraines would decrease the risk described above in patients taking anti-depressant and experiencing migraines.

STRESS – A Major Cause of Migraines Headaches in Children

Italian researchers at the European Neurological Society reported that stress was a major factor in 72% of migraines in children.

Stress from school work, fear of failure, bullying and lack of sleep often caused by late night use of computers, hand-held devices or television were noted.

Parents of children who suffer with migraines should be aware of these issues and do their best to help the child address and resolve them.

stress is a trigger for migraine?

If your child has migraines (symptoms of headache pain, nausea/cyclic vomiting) 15 or more days per month, then your child may be a good candidate for migraine support.

Prescription migraine drugs are usually prescribed for adults and not children. Even those that have been tested in children may have significant side-effects which most parents would want to avoid.

Children’s MigreLief was developed for children between the ages of 2-11. Like Original MigreLief, which can be used by children 12 years of age and older, it is all natural, very effective, and recommended by many neurologists who specialize in migraines.

Good News for Chronic Migraine Sufferers… Help is Within Reach

WHEN YOU ARE SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED – IT’S TIME TO CONSIDER YOUR NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS.

Why are you still suffering chronic migraines?

Stephen Silberstein, M.D., director of the Jefferson Headache Center and professor of neurology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia is one of the most published migraine neurologists in the country.

According to Dr. Silberstein, “One of the greatest bugaboos we see every day in headache centers is patients with chronic daily or near-daily headache, who are overusing medication. It is our most common problem.  These patients have often not responded to treatment and in an attempt to treat themselves, actually make the problem worse. This is not addiction or an attempt to get ‘high’; rather, it is motivated by the patient’s desire to relieve pain and dysfunction.”

He added, “Migraine preventive therapy is grossly underused.”

We are happy to report…

AS A NUTRITIONAL OPTION, PHYSICIANS, NEUROLOGISTS AND LEADING HEADACHE CLINICS ARE RECOMMENDING MIGRELIEF TODAY MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.

This is good news for migraine sufferers, who have run the gambit of side-effect prone prescription and OTC drugs, only to find themselves caught up in a vicious cycle of recurring migraines (rebound headaches) or medication overuse headaches (MOH).

Officially, you are considered a chronic migraineur if you experience the symptoms of migraine attacks 15 days or more a month and therefore a candidate for the various preventive migraine options that exist.

chronic pain

Of course this is somewhat of an arbitrary definition and who is to say that if you experience 12 days a month of debilitating pain and live on pain medications, that you also wouldn’t benefit from preventive therapies.

Furthermore, the American Academy of Neurology recommends considering prevention when migraines substantially impact a patient’s life.

The AAN defines substantial as:

  • Recurring migraines that significantly interfere with daily routine, despite acute treatment
  • Frequent headaches
  • Contraindication to, failure of, or over use of acute therapies
  • Adverse events with acute therapies
  • Patient preference
  • Presence of uncommon migraine conditions, including hemiplegic migraine, basiliar migraine, migraine with prolonged aura , or migrainous infarction.

Unlike medications taken to relieve the pain and other symptoms of a migraine attack once it occurs, preventive therapies are taken on a daily basis to prevent migraines from occurring in the first place or to decrease the frequency, intensity and duration of migraines.

If it has become obvious to you that taking pain relievers to treat the pain of your migraines, has become an all too frequent part of your month, then preventive options may, really improve the quality of your life.

The issue is that many migraineurs who have tried prescription preventive migraine drugs have experienced a range of side-effects, some of which are annoying enough to cause them to stop using these medications.

A list of just some of the side-effects associated with these various types of medications are *

  • Loss of sex drive
  • Memory problems
  • Speech problems
  • Unwanted weight gain or loss
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Dry mouth
  • Severe dizziness
  • Blurred vision

*Not every preventive medication has all of these side-effects.

Neurology studies and surveys such as the one published in the journal “Headache” and carried out by the Michigan Head Pain Neurological Institute have shown that patients want and need their physicians to explain the side-effects they may be exposed to when they need to make a choice as to what preventive options they are going to try.

The survey found that chronic migraineurs are even willing to take more than one preventive medicine if additional relief is noticed. Two of the biggest side-effect concerns amongst women migraineurs were weight gain and sleepiness.

According to Dr. Silberstein, “Migraine prevention can be difficult to initiate. Patients may be hesitant to take daily medication for headache. Often, education and patients are key to successful treatment with preventive medications.”

Silberstein continues, “It may take some patients up to 3 months to see an improvement in headache patterns, especially if they are not keeping a diary, where headaches slowly become less frequent and less severe. Until successful preventive medication is underway, regulating acute medications can be problematic.  Coexisting conditions (depression, anxiety) also may need to be monitored and possibly treated. “  (Link to past depression articles)

ADDRESSING MIGRAINES ON A NUTRITIONAL LEVEL:
It is important to note that MigreLief® Triple Therapy with Puracol™ does not interfere with prescription or OTC migraine drugs.  MigreLief is a good fit for migraineurs who wish to slowly detox from the overuse of medications as it has been known to lessen the side effects while it addresses the underlying nutritional deficiencies and imbalances that may have caused the migraines in the first place.

Although it is recommended that MigreLief be taken for 3 months for maximum beneficial results, many patients have reported success in as little as three weeks. While MigreLief’s ingredients are building blood levels over this time period for maximum benefits, we recommend keeping MigreLief-NOW on hand at all times and taking as-needed.

We also recommend that a migraine diary be used to track the effects of MigreLief.

MigreLief’s triple therapy approach  stems from the three nutritional ingredients Magnesium (oxide and citrate), Riboflavin (B-2) and Puracol Feverfew (Proprietary form of the herb Feverfew (whole leaf and extract).

Information from physicians who are using MigreLief in their practices suggest that although these three ingredients work to some degree independently, they may have a synergistic affect when used in combination and therefore assist to maintain proper tone and functin of cerebral blood vessels. By improving tone, blood may flow freely from vessel to vessel and avoiding sudden spasms. It may also inhibit platelet aggregation, stabilize membranes, decrease the inflammatory process and maintain normal mitochondrial energy levels in brain cells.

MIGRELIEF INGREDIENTS

Magnesium:
Research studies show that almost half of all migraine sufferers have low blood levels of Magnesium, which is critical in controlling vasospasms (the contraction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which occurs during migraines).

Riboflavin (B-2):  Migraine sufferers also suffer mitochondrial energy deficiencies, which Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) can improve when given in high dosages.

Puracol Feverfew:  The plant material Feverfew has been shown to reduce platelet aggregation, which can lead to vasoconstriction.  The Puracol™ technology simultaneously maximizes parthenolide levels while maintaining the full spectrum of all the other naturally occurring compounds found in the whole plant.
