We have all known skinny women who think they are fat. Some of us have known people who are overweight but just don’t see themselves that way.

I’ve had men friends whose stomachs looked like they swallowed a small beach ball, bang on their abdomen and show me how hard it is. (Of course it’s hard because all that dangerous abdominal fat, which lies underneath their abdominal muscles, is pushing hard against them in an effort to burst out!).

The point here is that many people’s body image of themselves is just not accurate, probably due more to emotions and psychological issues than “bad” eyesight.

For the past few decades healthcare professionals have been using and recommending that people get or calculate their body mass index (BMI) to help them determine if they are over-weight/over-fat.

You can calculate your BMI by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches times itself and multiplying that amount by 703.

So for example a woman who weighs 125 lbs and is 5’4” (64 inches tall) has a BMI of:

125 divided by the product of 64 times 64 then this amount is multiplied by 703, since 64 times 64 = 4096

Then 125/4096 = .0305175 X 703 = 21.45 BMI (in the healthy range)

A 5’9” fashion model who weighs 120 lbs would have a BMI of 17.7 (which is considered extremely underweight.)

BMI’s of less than 20 are considered to be underweight.

BMI’s between 20 and 25 are considered to be normal weight.

BMI’s between 25 and 30 are considered to be overweight.

BMI’s over 30 are considered to be obese.

The problem with using BMI to make these body weight decisions is that BMI doesn’t take into consideration people who are large boned, people who are very muscular and people (especially those above 50 years old, who may have lost lean muscle as they aged). In essence it doesn’t differentiate between bone weight, fat weight and muscle weight.

For those in the older group, their weight may have stayed the same or gone up only slightly but they replaced the lean muscle weight they lost, with fat weight. So, although their BMI comes out looking normal, a much greater percentage of their weight is fat than is probably ideal.

A good example of the above is in the elderly who can actually look thin and frail and yet have body fat percentages in the 30% range.

Obviously BMI measurements have their short comings but an even more important question about BMI measurements is now being asked: “Are they helpful in predicting future health or illness/disease and longevity?

The answer seems to be that they are not as “predictive” of what your future health situation will be as originally thought and that a better measurement to predict the effect of your weight and body composition on your health and longevity is the “Waist to Height” ratio.

Keeping the ratio of your waist in inches divided by your height in inches to below .5 (or in other words your waist in inches less than 50% of your height in inches) helps you to avoid the illnesses and diseases that can shorten your life span and can add years to your life expectancy. (Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer).

So a 5’10” male (70 inches tall) should have a waist measurement of less than 35 inches.

The 5’4” woman we mentioned before (64 inches tall) should have a waist measurement of less than 32 inches.

Researchers from Oxford followed the waist-to-height ratio and the BMI of thousands of people for 20 years and found that the waist-to-height ratio was much more predictive of poorer health and reduced life-span than the BMI measurement, as the participants waistlines increased in size.

Men whose ratio approached .8 (a waist measurement of 80% of their height measurement) on average, lived 17 years shorter than people who were below .5.

Women with the .8 ratio lived on average 8.2 years less.

Assuring an accurate waist measurement:

I can’t speak to how women measure their waists but some men are “notorious” cheats or delusional or both when it comes to measuring their waists. They may have a 40 inch waist but wear their “34 inch jeans” six inches below their navel with their big bellies hanging over the waistline and state that they have a 34 inch waist.

The accurate way to measure your waistline whether you are a man or a woman is to measure either about an inch above the belly button or midway between the top of your hips and the bottom of your rib cage. They should both come out around the same spot.

Often there is a guilt felt among migraine sufferers, especially mothers, who sometimes feel they are letting their family down when needing to cancel family time, plans, or social events due to a migraine attack. It is a way of life for many mothers and not by choice. Remember to be understanding because mom does not have “just another bad headache.” She has one of the top disabling, and debilitating disorders in the world.

Being unavailable to people, especially their children is especially difficult for Moms and feelings of guilt or worry may only compound the pain. A little compassion and understanding for migraineur moms will go a long way.

Another great gift for Mom, would be life changing MigreLief. Countless Moms and other migraine sufferers have regained their quality of life with MigreLief. MigreLief is the top nutritional supplement recommended by healhtcare professionals. Formulated to maintain normal cerebrovascular function (keep the blood flowing properly in the brain) MigreLief addresses the underlying nutritional deficiencies and imbalances that many migraine sufferers have in common.

Migraines should not be a way of life. Regaining quality time with children, family and friends is something all moms should enjoy.

Patient – Consumer Reviews:

~ “Awesome!” (In response to announcement -MigreLief in CVS Pharmacy Stores Nov. 2012)
“I get mine shipped automatically to my house every 3 months but at least I can now tell others where to get it! I have turned so many people onto MigreLief! It is a miracle in a bottle! NEVER stop making this stuff!” Sunny S. – (Facebook post)

~ I had migraines regularly, approximately three times a week, for at least 25 years. Once my doctor put me on Migrelief, the migraines have gone. I rarely have a migraine now. When I become aware of anyone experiencing migraines on a regular basis I always recommend Migrelief.

~ As a migraine sufferer for over 30 years, my neurologist recommended Migrelief. After I tried it, I went from 15-20 migraines a year, to 2 or 3 a year. I buy a 3 months supply and when I get near the end of the last bottle, I reorder. I could never be without them again. Anyone who has ever suffered with migraine headaches, knows that the pain is torture. I am so grateful that I found “Migrelief”

~ MigreLief is something that EVERY migraine sufferer should check into and use!! 48 years of constant migraines have ended because of MigreLief! Jim H.

The neurologist I have been seeing for my migraines suggested that I try MigreLief. I am 68 years old and have suffered migraines ever since I can remember. Before I discovered that my migraines are triggered by foods that I eat, I routinely spent three days in bed two or three times each month with totally debilitating migraines with all their unpleasant symptoms. I was extremely skeptical that something as simple and inexpensive as a supplement would have any effect on my headaches. Not only are my headaches no longer a problem, I feel TERRIFIC! I awake every morning with a clear and pain-free head. Because I am a senior, cost is of great importance to me and MigreLief is definitely affordable. Thank you immensely for developing this simple, but effective, relief for migraines. — Kathryn

~ I have had migraines since I was 16 years old. My Headache Specialist, Dr. Ready (the best) recommended your product about a year ago, and it has been a God send! MigreLief has reduced my headaches by at least half. When I don’t take it– like if I run out, I am MISERABLE (like right now). I have tried taking the vitamins separately– doesn’t work. MigreLief is the way to go. I still take a couple of scrips, but in 20 years I have never had the success that I am having now with your product!

~ I had migraines regularly, approximately three times a week, for at least 25 years. Once my doctor put me on Migrelief, the migraines have gone. I rarely have a migraine now.

~ MigreLief has been of great relief in the treatment and prevention of migraines for me and my 11 year old son who hasn’t had an episode in over a year.

~ I was a chronic migraine sufferer for YEARS. The medications prescribed by my physician made me so out of it I could not function. Therefore, I pretty much suffered thru them or just went to bed. Not always an easy answer when you work and have children. Thank you for creating MigreLief.

~ When I don’t take MigreLief, I get 3-4 migraines per week. Since starting it, my migraines have decreased by 50%. I feel good about taking vitamins rather than medications with scary side effects.

~ I have suffered from migraine headaches since I was 5 years old. A few years ago I was having one every other day and my husband would have to take me to the emergency hospital for a shot of Demerol.. I started taking the MigreLief and the headaches immediately stopped!

~ My son used to have headaches 24/7. They are now not so frequent and less intense.

~ MigreLief has completely changed my life. I was a long time migraine sufferer and found prescription drugs to be not super effective and made me drowsy. My life was completely dictated by my migraines and I was miserable. Many doctors wanted to prescribe me daily medicines for prevention, but I didn’t want to put these lab created drugs into my body everyday for the rest of my life. I knew there had to be a better solution. A neurologist recommended MigreLief and within a week I felt dramatic changes. My migraines were literally gone. I was almost a daily sufferer, having migraines 4-5 times a week at least. I swear by MigreLief and consider it a miracle product.

~ I started taking MigreLief a few years ago because I was missing work and school due to migraines. My migraines have been cut by at least 50% and I only need my emergency migraine prescription once in a while.

~ Oh my gosh!…I have been taking MigreLief for a little over 2 years now and I have not had a debilitating migraine headache ever since I began taking it. I won’t go a day without taking it. I recommend it all the time. My cousin is a neurologist and I’ve got her recommending it now too!

~ MigreLief has given me my life back! I was getting migraines 2-3 times a week. It works better at preventing Migraines than the medical prescriptions I tried without the side effects. Now, when I get a migraine, I take an aspirin and lie down for an hour. Sometimes I need an ice pack, but usually that’s all it takes to get rid of it. There are side benefits, my nails are stronger now. That’s a win win situation.

~ MigreLief has helped a lot. I still have headaches, but nothing like they were before I started taking MigreLief. I forgot to take the Migrelief for a couple of days and I had a bad migraine so I do need to remember to take it everyday.

~ MigreLief has really helped me in the prevention of migraines. If I run out of it and don’t have a spare bottle on hand, my migraines can easily come back. It is the key to prevention of what was once debilitating, life altering hemiplegic migraines. I recommend it all the time and have given it as gifts to fellow migraine sufferers.

~ i have been taking MigreLief for almost two months. That plus stopped eating chocolate seems to have helped. I wish you would sell it in the U.K.

~ It brought my attacks down from 4 days every month to 1 day every 8 weeks and that attack is usually very mild.

~ MigreLief really decreased the number and severity. Probably only get one per month now vs. one or two a week. The one I do get is not too severe.

~ I feel more balanced and in control. Since beginning MigreLief my migraines have dramatically decreased. (I just began my third month of taking MigreLief).

~ I went from 1 -2 migraines a month to 1 every six months.

~ MigreLief cut annual hormonal migraines by at least 75 percent, if not more. I know this to be true because I stopped taking MgreLief for about 8 months at one point. My migraines became more frequent and severe when I stopped. I started right back up, when my MD agreed that it was definitely helping. No question about it.

~ It has kept my migraines to a minimum, which has made life a lot easier to keep on schedule.

~ It has only been 2 months and I see a difference from taking MigreLief. Not so intense and not so many.

~ Since taking MigreLief, my migraines have been dramatically reduced – and the ones I do get are so much less painful that I haven’t taken my Imitrex in two years!

That’s a win win situation, if you ask me.

~ It has helped me tremendously. I can tell the difference. My migraines are fewer and not as strong.

~ I take MigreLief in addition to my prescription meds. I have not had a migraine lately.

I have fewer migraines. When I do have a migraine it is less severe and not as long in duration

~ MIGERELIEF IS WONDERFULL. I WAS TAKING A PRESCRIPTION THAT MY DOCTOR GAVE ME FOR MY HEAD ACHES. NOW I DO NOT TAKE THEM MUCH!

~ I’ve had a lot fewer migraines since I’ve been taking Migrelief. Thank you, Akeso!

I have suffered with migraines for over 20 years. In the last year I was getting them almost every day. I was on Topamax which made me feel like my brain was dying. I did some of my own research and that’s when I started on Magnesium and Feverfew. I then got the book about migraines and they told me to add B2. I came across MigRelief and Wow. I might have 3 headaches a month, no longer everyday.

~ I was a chronic migraine sufferer for YEARS. The medications prescribed by my physician made me so out of it I could not function. Therefore, I pretty much suffered thru them or just went to bed. Not always an easy answer when you work and have children. Thank you for creating MigreLief.

~ Since finding out about MigreLief from my neurologist, I have become a completely different person. I have been migraine free since February 2010 and have only experienced a couple of mild allergy related headaches in that time.

~ MigreLief has helped lessen both the frequency and the intensity of my daughter’s migraines.

~ It has helped reduce the number of onsets and has also helped my insomnia. I worked as a Teachers Aid this year. The teacher that I was assigned to struggled with migraines so I told her about the product as well as one of my son’s friends school classmates who developed migraines this year.

~ In lots of ways I suffered Migraines all my life. It wasn’t until i found it on the net and decided to try it as anything is worth a go after I have tried everything. Going by 1 month I found that my attacks were not so severe, and after that they were not so often. I have been taking MigreLief for many years now and found they are my little miracle pills. It works better than anything else I have tried without side effects. I recommend it all the time.

~ I have so many fewer migraines now, it’s crazy. I used to have 3 or 4 a week. Now I only have 2 or 3 a month!!

~ MigreLief is absolutely amazing!!!!!

~ Both the frequency and intensity of my headaches have decreased significantly since I started using Migrelief last year. And, when I do get a headache, I need much less medication to get relief. Often, just a single Excedrin will be sufficient.

~ I have had migraines for over 30 years. The pharmacy that fills all of the pain meds for me asked me if I had ever tried MigreLief and I started using it twice a day about one year ago. I still have headaches but not as many.

~ I give MigreLief to my daughter who has Abdominal Migraines. MigreLief has helped with the dizziness she has when she has an episode.

~ It has been a Godsend! I can honestly say that I have NOT had a full blown migraine since taking MigreLief.

~ Within 4 months, I had my life back. I have gone from having 4-6 excruciating migraines per week to 1-2 per month! I cannot believe how well Migrelief has worked for me.

I was almost a daily sufferer, having migraines 4-5 times a week at least. I swear by MigreLief and consider it a miracle product. I have recommended MigreLief to friends and family. I gave a co-worker a bottle when I had put an order in about a year ago. And just within the last 2 weeks gave a bottle to my an extended family member’s husband to try because he has been suffering from migraines with no resolution for almost a year. I would recommend MigreLief to anyone who suffers from migraines, it has truly changed me life.

~ I have so many fewer migraines now, it’s crazy. I used to have 3 or 4 a week. Now I only have 2 or 3 a month!

~ MigreLief has decreased my migraines from one every 9 weeks to two a YEAR!!!

~ Both the frequency and intensity of my headaches have decreased significantly since I started using Migrelief last year. And, when I do get a headache, I need much less medication to get relief. Often, just a single Excedrin will be sufficient.

~ Prior to starting MigreLief well over 3 yrs. ago, I would get migraines up to 6 times a month and had since age 14. That was 50 years of suffering. When I began taking MigreLief my migraines reduced to only 1-2 a month and I had changed nothing else. My migraines did not lessen during pregnancies, menopause or during hormone replacement therapy. They come when things seem fine and don’t come when stressed or ill. I think of all those years when no one could figure out why I was getting migraines, (other than my father had them his whole life) and it turns out I surely was deficient in magnesium and likely in vitamin B. Nothing puts me down like a migraine which means I cannot drive a car or go to work when I have one. They are intense but nothing like the ones I’d get before Migrelief. I have recommended it in the past and will continue to do so in the future. I have shown people the empty bottle to help them recognize and locate this product. And what I like is that there is no foul odor from the tablets, they are tasteless and they don’t repeat on me like many vitamins do.

~ MigreLief has really helped me in the prevention of migraines. If I run out of it and don’t have a spare bottle on hand, my migraines can easily come back. It is the key to prevention of what was once debilitating, life altering hemiplegic migraines.

~ The mere fact that a company is out there trying to help us poorly understood migraineurs, with a product is already a blessing. Migrelief over time has definitely reduced my Migraines.

~ When I don’t take MigreLief, I get 3-4 migraines per week. Since starting it, my migraines have decreased by 50%. I feel good about taking vitamins rather than medications with scary side effects.

~ It has been a Godsend! I can honestly say that I have NOT had a full blown migraine since taking MigreLief.

~ In combination with Topomax, my migraines have been reduced from daily to just a few times a month.

~ How hasn’t it? Within 4 months, I had my life back. I have gone from having 4-6 excruciating migraines per week to 1-2 *per month*! I cannot believe how well Migrelief has worked for me!

~ I had migraines regularly, approximately three times a week, for at least 25 years. Once my doctor put me on Migrelief, the migraines have gone. I rarely have a migraine now. When I become aware of anyone experiencing migraines on a regular basis I always recommend Migrelief.

~ It really helped with my migraine headaches. After taking for several months I didn’t get the headaches anymore. However, now I’ve starting getting them on occasion again.

~ I have come from a non stop migraine for six years down to 3 or 4 a month. My acupuncturist recommended you.

Every time I hear some one mention their migraines I enter their conversation to recommend MigreLief.

~ I have suffered from migraine headaches since I was 5 years old. A few years ago I was having one every other day and my husband would have to take me to the emergency hospital for a shot of Demerol.. I started taking the MigreLief and the headaches immediately stopped!

~ From the very 1st tablet, my headaches have decreased almost instantly Those I have recommended MigreLief to have gotten incredible results as well.

~ MigreLief has reduced the frequency and strength of my migraines. Yes and I have! My doctor was very pleased to hear that your product was helping me, so much.

~ Used to get terrible migraines. Would head off to the chiropractor all the time because that was the only relief except Excedrin Migraine and my stomach was having a hard time with that pain killer. I have recommended to two friends who fight them all the time. For them it runs in the family and they have been surprised how well it works.

~ I have been taking MigreLief for over 5 years and it has greatly reduced the intensity and frequency of my migraines.

~ Some doctors think I may have two issues going on…migraine-associated vertigo and also a vestibular disorder (a problem with my ears also). The Migrelief has definitely taken away my migraines. So, because I may have two different problems going on I take the Migrelief for prevention of migraines but I also do vestibular rehabilitation therapy (exercises) at home for the dizziness/balance problem/lightheadedness. Having both these problems has obviously caused double whammy for me for the last 24 1/2 years and I literally was home-bound for the majority of the time because I felt so awful, missed doing many things in life, but with finding that the Migrelief has taken away the migraines I am now able to function way better and do more things. Again, thank you so much. You have actually given me my life back! I LOVE THE MIGRELIEF!!! —Kathryn

A study, as reported by ScienceDaily.com and other health sites, with results that will appear in the May issue of The American Journal of Medicine, has revealed that people who follow a Western-style diet have a reduced chance for reaching older age in good health and with high functionality.

The study was led by Dr. Tasnime Akbaraly, PhD, Inserm, Montpellier, France; his research team sought to identify dietary factors that can promote ideal aging and prevent premature death.

Dr. Akbaraly noted that “avoidance of ‘Western-type foods’ might actually improve the possibility of achieving an older age,” but more importantly,” achieve a lengthier life that is “free of chronic diseases” allowing the individual to remain highly functional.

What does this mean for parents?

With as many as 5% of children and adolescents affected by migraines and research confirming that dietary factors can trigger those migraines, it’s important to take a close look at your child’s diet.

The typical Western diet is filled with pro-inflammatory foods which lead to an overabundance of inflammation in the body, ultimately causing just about every type of chronic illness and disease, including migraines. Arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, depression, dementia and obesity are just a few among the long list of afflictions.

If you aren’t sure how or why inflammation causes devastating effects on the body, picture a car that is left outdoors in the elements for a period of time. That car will eventually begin to rust and disintegrate. Finally, it falls apart completely. Inflammation works in a similar way in the body. While a little, such as what happens after an injury with swelling, is a natural part of the healing process, uncontrolled inflammation that remains for long periods of time can cause serious damage.

Pro-inflammatory foods that contribute to this overabundance of inflammation include many foods that are typically found in the Western diet, such as:

· Packaged and processed foods including fast food and packaged desserts or snacks like cookies and cakes

· Common cooking oils that contain unhealthy fats such as sunflower, safflower and vegetable oil

· Margarine and heavily processed foods that contain Trans Fats

· Refined sugar and sugary foods

· Fried foods

· Many high-fat dairy products (the exception is kefir and some yogurts like plain Greek-style yogurt)

· Gluten and refined grains

· Feedlot-raised meats, red meat and processed meats

If your child has been eating many of these foods, it would be difficult to force a dramatic change in diet. Instead, consider moderation as a key factor and limit the above items as much as you’re able. Stock your refrigerator with healthy snacks and be sure to follow a healthier diet yourself to set the right example.

By eating more nutritionally rich, high anti-oxidant foods, the symptoms of chronic illness, including migraines, can be greatly reduced as these foods help to neutralize the free radicals that result from too much inflammation. You’ll also be helping to reduce the chances of developing other chronic illnesses and disease.

Encourage as many whole fresh foods as possible. Talk to your child about what he or she likes, and pack a lunch that is based on some of those nutritious foods.

Foods that are especially rich in antioxidants include deeply-pigmented vegetables and fruits. Dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and arugula as well as beets, blueberries and any richly colored purple, red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables.

Healthy fats like the omega-3 fatty acids in wild-caught salmon and monounsaturated fats found in most nuts and olive oil are also important as they serve to decrease inflammation in the body and ultimately help to achieve optimal health.

As with adults, making gradual diet changes can lead to a happier, healthier, and much higher quality of life for your child now and in the future. No one would want their child to have to live with the constant pain and debilitation that can come with chronic illness and disease. If it can be prevented, doesn’t it make sense to do so sooner rather than later?
To the Best of Health,

The study, reported by ScienceDaily.com, was led by Dr. Tasnime Akbaraly, PhD, Inserm, Montpellier, France, with the research team seeking to identify dietary factors that can promote ideal aging and prevent premature death.

Dr. Akbaraly noted that “avoidance of ‘Western-type foods’ might actually improve the possibility of achieving an older age,” but more important,” achieve a lengthier life that is “free of chronic diseases” allowing the individual to remain highly functional.

The study reveals what many have suspected and even experienced in their own lives already. There has been much research done on the connection between inflammation and virtually all chronic illness and disease, including migraines, arthritis, diabetes, obesity as well as heart disease, cancer, depression and dementia.

An easier way to explain the devastating effects of inflammation is to imagine a car that is left out in the elements for a period of time. Eventually, that car begins to rust and ultimately disintegrate and fall apart completely. The process is similar within the body. A little inflammation, such as swelling after an injury, is a natural and positive part of the healing process. It is uncontrolled inflammation that is allowed to remain over longer periods of time that does serious damage.

Pro-inflammatory foods contribute to this overabundance of inflammation. This includes those foods that are typically of the Western diet, such as:

» Packaged and processed foods including fast food and packaged desserts or snacks like cookies and cakes

»Common cooking oils that contain unhealthy fats such as sunflower, safflower and vegetable oil

» Margarine and heavily processed foods that contain Trans Fats

» Refined sugar and sugary foods

» Fried foods

» Many high-fat dairy products (the exception is kefir and some yogurts like plain Greek-style yogurt)

» Gluten and refined grains

» Feedlot-raised meats, red meat and processed meats

» Alcohol

Of course, as with anything, moderation is key. It would be difficult if not impossible for a person who eats the average American’s diet to change overnight. Limiting the above items and filling your diet with as many nutritionally packed, high anti-oxidant foods will go a long way in reducing the chances of developing chronic illness or reducing symptoms in someone who is already suffering.

Foods that are high in anti-oxidants can help neutralize the free radicals that result from too much inflammation.

Include as many whole fresh foods in your diet as possible. Foods that are especially rich in antioxidants include deeply-pigmented vegetables and fruits. Dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and arugula as well as beets, blueberries and any richly colored purple, red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables.

Include healthy fats like the omega-3 fatty acids in wild-caught salmon and monounsaturated fats in most nuts and olive oil.

Making gradual diet changes can lead to a happier, healthier, and much higher quality of life – without the constant pain and debilitation that can come with chronic illness and disease. Isn’t your life worth it?

WHAT IS RIBOFLAVIN?

Riboflavin also known as Vitamin B-2, is an essential nutrient required for life. One of the most important uses of riboflavin is that it helps in the production of energy in the body. The vitamin is water soluble, which means the body cannot store it, but it is vital for red blood cell production and growth.

Carbohydrates, fats and proteins all interact with riboflavin when releasing energy for our bodies to use. Riboflavin also acts as an antioxidant which can prevent premature aging and chronic illness.

NATURAL FOOD SOURCES OF RIBOFLAVIN
It’s naturally found in organ meats such as liver and kidney and in many vegetables, legumes, nuts and leafy greens like spinach. Some of the richest sources include calf liver, torula yeast and brewer’s yeast, while almonds, wheat germ and mushrooms, milk, cheddar cheese and eggs are also good sources.

RIBOFLAVIN BENEFITS

- Riboflavin is involved in energy production in every cell.

- Riboflavin helps convert carbohydrates to sugar which acts as fuel to carry out bodily functions. It is also critical to the breakdown of fats and proteins into energy your body can use. The enzymes involved in energy production do not function optimally without adequate riboflavin in the diet, which may lead to fatigue.

- Riboflavin is an excellent antioxidant which protects your body from free radical damage and aids in slowing the process of aging and many chronic diseases.

- Riboflavin is essential for the formation and proper functioning of fresh red blood cells. It interacts with iron which is used to synthesize hemoglobin (a major component of oxygen-carrying red blood cells.) Keeping hemoglobin levels high, helps your body to get the oxygen-rich blood necessary to perform the daily functions of life.

- Riboflavin is essential for the growth of healthy body tissue, including skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue. (One of the most common signs of riboflavin or vitamin B-2 deficiency is scaly, dry skin, cracked lips and lesions around the mouth.)

- Riboflavin ensures proper growth and healthy reproductive organs

- Riboflavin helps to maintain a healthy immune system by enhancing the natural immunity by strengthening the antibody reserves and by reinforcing the defense system against infections.

- Riboflavin protects the nervous system: Vitamin B2 can help in treating various nervous system conditions such as multiple sclerosis, anxiety and epilepsy.

- Riboflavin helps to prevents acne. It helps improve the mucus secretion of skin and might clean up the skin pustules.

- Riboflavin (B-2) also plays a major role in the functioning of the other B complex vitamins like vitamin B3 (niacin) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Therefore, lack of riboflavin in the body can hinder the activity of other vitamins.

- Riboflavin is used in iron therapy for the treatment of sickle cell and iron deficiency anemia.

- Riboflavin may lower the risk of cataract in people.

- Riboflavin helps in the repair of tissue, healing and infection

- Riboflavin assists in regulating thyroid activity.

- Riboflavin helps prevent conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, acne, and migraines.

Riboflavin/B-2 metabolites such as Flavin Adenine Dinucleotide or “FAD” are co-factors in the Krebs Cycle that produces energy. This coenzyme is an important component of the electron-transport chain. This is crucial because a deficiency of mitrochondrial energy reserves has been observed in migraine sufferers and many people exhibiting poor cerebrovascular tone. Furthermore, migraineurs experience significant mitochondrial energy deficiencies prior to a migraine. Replenishing them with high dose ribolavin helps to avoid migraines.

Note: “Flavin” refers to any of a group of yellow nitrogen-containing pigments, as riboflavin, that function as coenzymes. Because the vitamin riboflavin is water soluble and not stored in the body, excess riboflavin not utilized by cells in the body is safely eliminated through the urine causing it to turn yellow.

MigreLief provides 400mg of Riboflavin, which is significantly higher than most multi-vitamins or B-complex products.

Multiple studies have demonstrated that high dose riboflavin can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines in both adults and children. While women suffer migraine attacks three times more than men, both men and women equally benefit from riboflavin treatment.

The Journal of Headache & Pain reported on the results of a study; Riboflavin Prophylaxis in Pediatric and Adolescent Migraine, ”… In conclusion, riboflavin seems to be a well-tolerated, effective, and low-cost prophylactic treatment in children and adolescents suffering from migraine.”

(J Headache Pain. 2009 Oct;10(5):361-5. Epub 2009 Aug 1. – Riboflavin prophylaxis in pediatric and adolescent migraine – Condò M, Posar A, Arbizzani A, Parmeggiani A, Department of Neurological Sciences, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.)

COMBINATION OF NUTRITIONAL THERAPIES
Riboflavin – Magnesium – Fevefew

Nutritional deficiencies, inflammation and vasospasms can independantly and togehter contribute to migraines occurring. While riboflavin can be effective at reducing migraine attacks, combining riboflavin with magnesium and feverfew provides three mechanisms of action, each working independently and together in a triple therapy approach to battling migraine disorder. All 3 are listed in the “American Academy of Neurology’s Evidence Based Guidelines For Migraine Prevention
(Superior Efficacy of Puracol Feverfew™) (Magnesium Helps with Much More than Migraines

In fact, a 2003 study in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association noted that using riboflavin in combination with feverfew and magnesium, helps to maintain normal cerebrovascular function aiding the blood to flow more properly in the brain. When the blood is flowing the way it should, it can prevent sudden spasms and decrease inflammation, resulting in the prevention of migraines.

Medication Overuse Headache- (MOH) - A big dilemma.

The following comment is from Stephen Silberstein, M.D., director of the Jefferson Headache Center and professor of neurology, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia

“One of the greatest bugaboos we see every day in headache centers is patients with chronic daily or near-daily headache, who are overusing medication. It is our most common problem. These patients have often not responded to treatment and in an attempt to treat themselves, actually make the problem worse. This is not addiction or an attempt to get ‘high’; rather, it is motivated by the patient’s desire to relieve pain and dysfunction. Migraine preventive therapy is grossly underused.”

Do you find yourself taking more and more medications to try to keep your migraines/headaches under control? Do you find that one or two days after taking your medications that your headaches return? Do you use more than three triptan drugs a week? Are you taking OTC drugs 15 days or more out of every month?

If your answer to any of the above questions is “YES”, then you may very well be suffering from Medication-Over-Use-Headaches. The drugs you are taking are actually causing you to experience more headaches, even if they temporarily help the headache at hand.

Triptans, ergot drugs, opiates (morphine, codeine, meperidine (Demerol), oxycodone (Oxycontin) (Butorphanol) and OTC pain pills can all cause medication over-use headaches (MOH). If people use 3 or more triptans a week they will probably get rebounds, the same for opiates and if they are using Excedrin or other OTC pain pills 12-15 days a month or more, they will definitely get rebound headaches as well.

TIME TO DETOX

Research has shown that withdrawing (detoxing) from these drugs can in many cases reduce the total number of headaches you experience as well as the intensity of those headaches. Withdrawal is not easy and the symptoms of withdrawal can be challenging, but the results are definitely worth it for most sufferers.

For triptans, the detox period during which there may be withdrawal symptoms, like continuing headaches, nausea, vomiting, and disrupted sleep will last about 4-5 days on average.

The symptoms may last up to 8-10 days for withdrawing from opiates, ergots or OTC drugs.

The literature and research states that it is important to start taking a preventive treatment product prior to or at the same time you start the detox program. (see www.MIGRELIEF.COM) We recommend starting MigreLief one week before withdrawing from the drug that is being over-used.

There seems to be little difference in the ultimate results and success whether people withdraw “cold turkey” or gradually.

Keep a rescue pain medication available that is different from the medication that has been over-used, for emergency situations, only!

So if you are withdrawing from triptans or opiates, keep ibuprofen or Excedrine Migraine available, BUT JUST FOR EMERGENCIES WHERE THE PAIN CAN NO LONGER BE TOLERATED. USE THE RESCUE MEDICATION VERY SPARINGLY; YOU DON’T WANT TO SWITCH FROM OVER-USING ONE DRUG FOR A NEW ONE. (THAT WILL GET YOU NO WHERE!).

If withdrawing from OTC medications, keep a triptan or opiate drug available for an emergency rescue situation only.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO STAY VERY WELL HYDRATED. DRINK AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE.

At the end of 5-10 days, depending upon what medication you are withdrawing from, you should find that your rebound headaches have significantly diminished or disappeared.

Your use of the offending medication should be either eliminated or substantially reduced. Be sure to keep taking MigreLief daily because preventive products are very important to the success of this program. Continue to take MigreLief to maintain the benefits you have achieved.

45% OF SUFFERERS WHO GO THROUGH THIS PROCEDURE MAY RELAPSE. IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE USE OF THE PREVENTIVE AND KEEP THE USE OF RESCUE MEDICATIONS TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM TO PREVENT RELAPSE.

One of the hardest things for a parent to do is to see their child in pain. Yet every day millions of parents must watch helplessly as their children suffer from debilitating migraine attacks. About one out of every 10 kids, or nearly 8 million children in the United States alone are plagued by what has become the most common acute and recurrent headache pattern experienced by children today.

The under-use of migraine prevention was discussed in a recent NPR.org (Nat’l Public Radio) article stating “Researchers are finding that “migraines beget migraines,” therefore the mandate for all patients is clear: Reduce the number of migraines.” Andrew Charles, director of UCLA’s Headache Research and Treatment Program, states it’s not clear why, but the “more migraines a patient gets, the more susceptible they become to having more,” adding that “there seems to be this sort of tipping point where patients go from having episodic headaches to having them really continuously and being in a state of constant sensory sensitivity.” Charles and other researchers are investigating exactly why and how that “tipping point” occurs.

FOR CHILDREN AGE 2 YEARS OR OLDER – A SAFE NUTRITIONAL OPTION WITH NONE OF THE POTENTIALLY DISRUPTIVE SIDE-EFFECTS OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Be it supplement, OTC drug or prescription drug, Children’s MigreLief is the first and only natural preventive therapy developed specifically for children suffering from migraine headaches. These often incapacitating migraine headaches strike suddenly and often with accompanying symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting. Until MigreLief, the only option available was the use of side-effect prone prescription medications and OTC drugs with the potential to cause more migraines known as rebound headaches.

KEEP YOUR CHILD OFF THE MERRY-GO-ROUND OF RECURRING HEADACHES

Many chronic migraine sufferers resort to taking prescription medicines such as triptans when a migraine gets out of control. These medicines are abortive drugs used “acutely.” This means you take them when you already have a migraine you hope to stop. These drugs do not prevent migraines from occurring.

In fact, not only do they not prevent migraines, the general consensus amongst researchers and clinicians is that on-going regular use of triptan increase the total number of migraines. OTC drugs containing caffeine such as Excedrin Migraine (acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine) are also notorious for causing rebound headaches if taken too often.

PREVENTION IS KEY

It is far better to attack migraines at their source as opposed to treating the pain and other symptoms of migraines forever. Migrelief was formulated to specifically address the underlying nutritional deficiencies and imbalances that often lead to dysfunctional brain processes, including platelet aggregation, changing veins, vasospasms, and the depletion of cellular energy production—all associated with chronic migraine headaches.

The alternative migraine treatments have the potential for significant side-effects in adults and not an option most parents would want to subject a child to. Children’s MigreLief is the perfect solution…three trusted ingredients, all well known for their safety, efficacy and low side-effects to establish normal vascular function instead of a lifetime on pain killers and abortive drugs.

Magnesium (oxide & citrate) – 180 mg/day
Riboflavin (B-2) – 200 mg/day
Feverfew (Proprietary Puracol Feverfew-whole leaf and extract) – 50 mg/day

(SAFE FOR CHILDREN AGE 2 YEARS AND OLDER. Contains no yeast, milk, corn, wheat, gluten, soy, sodium, salt, sugar, flavorings, preservatives, or artificial colors)

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT VS. MIGRELIEF NATURAL SUPPLEMENT

We understand that as a parent, you want, not only to have your child’s pain relieved, but you also do not want them to have anything that would further harm them. That’s the beauty the “Triple Therapy Approach” of MigreLief. There are three well known natural prophylactic mechanisms of action working at the cellular level to solve the problem.

There are no specific side-effects associated with the ingredients in Children’s MigreLief and childhood use. Dietary supplements of any kind can cause gastrointestinal upset in susceptible users. With MigreLief, there also is no concern about drug interaction with any other medications a child might be taking.

As of this writing (July 2012), there are no medications for treating children’s migraines that are without major controversy, especially the class of medication known as Triptans. If you do your own research, you will see in journals where triptans (such as Children’s Imitrex) are being considered or even approved for children by the FDA, but you will find as many or more articles saying that triptans are in no way safe for children. The only medicine deemed “safe” for treating children’s migraines is ibuprofen. Anyone who has suffered a migraine will tell you that ibuprofen doesn’t begin to mitigate the pain, nor will it prevent future migraines.

Topamax (topiramate), the latest prophylactic medication being touted on the market to treat children’s migraines prophylactically (preventively) is an anti-convulsant used to control epilepsy and has also been promoted as a weight loss drug. This same drug has been shown in clinical trials to cause a full 27% of child test subjects to lose weight. Other side effects are known to be upper respiratory infection, anorexia, and paresthesia. These were the results of the only major clinical study conducted on topiramate for children. Outside of the general discussion of Topamax’s side effects, one source (http://epilepsy.emedtv.com) cited that side effects such as memory loss or difficulty concentrating make it difficult to tolerate Topamax. Such side effects could be devastating for a school student, especially if the child already suffers from ADHD.

Additionally, if the child is already being treated pharmacologically for ADHD, depression, anxiety, stress, anorexia, or anything requiring medication, adding yet another medication to those already stressing the child’s body is simply unsound at best, and life-threatening at worst. Combining other medications, especially antidepressants, with migraine medications such as those mentioned above can raise serotonin levels too much and result in serotonin syndrome. (Read more about this potentially dangerous drug combination)

According to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, “Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that may occur following therapeutic drug use, or as an inadvertent interaction between drugs.” Even a commonly used over-the-counter cough suppressant ingredient, dextromethorphan, combined with a migraine medication can cause serotonin syndrome.

MIGRELIEF CAN BE SAFELY COMBINED WITH OTHER MEDICATIONS

None of these side effects are of concern with the nutritional dietary supplement MigreLief. Formulated to addresses the underlying nutritional deficiencies and imbalances that many migraine sufferers have in common, the MigreLief alternative is far better than treating migraine symptoms and pain for a lifetime.

NIP MIGRAINE DISEASE IN THE BUD – NATURALLY!
TRUSTED “TRIPLE THERAPY” FOR MIGRAINE PREVENTION - A VITAMIN, A MINERAL AND A PLANT

Children’s MigreLief is the perfect solution…a vitamin, a mineral and a plant, all well known for their safety, efficacy and low side-effects to establish normal vascular function instead of a lifetime on pain killers and abortive drugs. All three ingredients are listed in the American Academy of Neurology’s Evidence Based Guidelines for Migraine Prevention

MigreLief Original Formula contains a patented “Triple Therapy” approach to reestablishing normal cerebrovascular tone and function that is disrupted in children who have migraines. Nutritional deficiencies, inflammation, and vasospasm can independently and together contribute to migraine occurrence, frequency and intensity. Children’s MigreLief contains the same “Triple Therapy” ingredients as MigreLief but with dosages and pill sizes adjusted to meet the needs of children.

MigreLief’s ingredients; Puracol, a proprietary blend of two unique feverfew sources, magnesium from two sources and high dose, highly absorbable riboflavin (Vitamin B-2) have all independently been shown to be of significant preventive benefit to chronic migraine sufferers.

THE SCIENCE OF MIGRELIEF

The multi-patented combination of ingredients in MigreLief was formulated to correct the underlying dysfunctional processes in the brain that often lead to migraines once triggered. MigreLief helps to reestablish and maintain normal cerebrovascular function by addressing the nutritional deficiencies and imbalances often associated with migraines such as:

*Excessive Platelet Aggregation resulting in blood vessel changes.

*Decrease in the brain’s cellular energy reserves. Cells lose energy production ability when the powerhouses of the cells (the mitochondria) become dysfunctional due to nutritional deficiencies.

Migrelief – Triple Therapy Ingredients:

Magnesium
Magnesium is a nutritional supplement with numerous effects that support cerebrovascular tone.

These include:

1) inhibition of platelet aggregation
2) interference with synthesis, release, and action of inflammatory mediators
3) direct alterations of cerebrovascular tone
4) inhibition of vasospasm
5) stabilization of cell membranes.

Some migraine sufferers with poor cerebrovascular tone have been found to have low brain levels of magnesium. Recommended daily dosages of magnesium typically range from 200 to 600 mg to compensate for this deficiency, far above what’s found in most multi-vitamins. Several double blind placebo controlled studies have demonstrated that oral magnesium can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine headaches in both adults and children.

Riboflavin
Riboflavin (vitamin B-2) is a precursor of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). This coenzyme is an important component of the electron-transport chain. A deficiency of mitrochondrial energy reserves has been observed in some persons exhibiting poor cerebrovascular tone. This defect may theoretically be corrected by a compound such as riboflavin that improves the activity of the electron-transport chain.

MigreLief provides 400mg of Riboflavin, which is significantly higher than most multi-vitamins or B-complex products. Multiple studies have demonstrated that high dose riboflavin can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines in both adults and children.

Puracol Feverfew
Commonly recommended for its ability to support cerebrovascular tone, feverfew (Tanacetum Parthenium) is rich in compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones. One of the more important of these compounds may be parthenolide, which represents 85% of the sesquiterpene lactone content in feverfew. Some scientific studies indicate that while parthenolide may be important there may very well be other phytochemicals in feverfew that are as of yet unidentified and play a role in its effectiveness.

Some studies of extracts of feverfew containing parthenolide yielded no significant benefits. This led researchers to believe that certain of the unidentified phytochemicals may have been left behind during the extraction process. The ideal solution would be a non-extracted feverfew product that naturally contained high levels of parthenolide and kept all of the other naturally occurring phytochemicals as well. For this reason Puracol Feverfew, AKESO HEALTH SCIENCE’S proprietary non extracted plant source for feverfew with high levels of naturally occurring parthenolide was developed. Puracol Feverfew is just one of the reasons for the superior efficacy of MigreLief, which delivers optimal dosages of parthenolide. Scientific studies have found parthenolide inhibits platelet aggregation and the release of serotonin from platelets and polymorphonuclear leukocyte granules.* It has also been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory prostaglandin synthesis and the release of arachadonic acid. Each of these phenomena is associated with migraines. European studies have shown the benefits of feverfew on long-term cerebrovasular tone in multiple human studies.

Teenagers get migraines too!

Migraines are extremely painful and often debilitating for adults, and unfortunately, teens and even children are not immune to migraine attacks. Just like adults, teens can also experience dizziness, vertigo, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, a lack of energy, disturbed vision and other symptoms.

Teen migraines are often different than adult migraines. While adult migraines often last several hours or more and settle on one side of the head, in a child, a migraine may last for as little as one hour and the pain is often felt across the front of the forehead or on both temples.

As a result, childhood migraines are often dismissed as sinus headaches. Some pediatric migraines don’t involve headache pain at all. Instead, the child or teen may have abdominal pain, vomiting or feelings of vertigo.

The attacks may be shorter, but after the migraine disappears it can cause an ill feeling that can be even worse than the head pain. Of course symptoms can vary from child to child and can also vary from one attack to the next.

No matter how you look at it, migraines are not something we’d want to wish on our worst enemy, let alone our child.

Children & Teens – migraine dilemma

Parents often dismiss headache complaints by kids & teens, or merely address the problem with a painkiller not knowing their child may be on a path to a lifetime of suffering migraines. Researchers are discovering the more migraines a person has, the greater the tendency for future migraines. Evidence shows an increased sensitivity after each successive attack, eventually leading to chronic daily migraines in some individuals. It would follow that in order for children to avoid a lifetime of migraines, it is imperative to lower the frequency of attacks as soon as possible.

The devastating effects on teens who suffer from migraines

Migraines in teens (as well as adults) can be disabling. They can cause frequently missed school days, a need to miss sports, work and other activities, and according to a University of Colorado at Denver study, teens who suffer from migraine headaches are also more likely to get lower grades and have a lesser chance of even graduating high school or attending college.

The results of the study found that migraines are an important obstacle to long-term academic success with sufferers having trouble attending school and concentrating on those days they are in school.

The teenage years are already a very difficult time in life, and with migraines they can seem impossible. With the natural response during a migraine attack to shut down and withdraw from the world, sufferers feel a sense of abandonment, which is extremely damaging during adolescence.

Surveys have found that almost every migraine sufferer’s life is negatively affected forcing them to avoid activities like:

Doing chores around the home

Taking part in favorite hobbies

Spending time with family and friends

Attending school

Making future plans

The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the USA published data in the medical journal, Headache – 2009, that proves a link between children suffering from migraine and emotional disorders. According to the study, “children suffering from migraines are at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems such as depression and anxiety”.

A study in 2007 found that teens who suffer from migraines have a higher risk of suicide and also a greater chance of developing mental disorders in addition to the headaches. 21% were found to develop major depression and 19% were found to experience panic attacks.

Migraine triggers in teens

While migraines can be unpredictable, it’s important to become aware of certain triggers. Sometimes by setting up a regular routine and avoiding known triggers, attacks can be minimized.

Teens, like adults, and sometimes even more so, can be severely affected by stress. Incorporating stress reduction activities like deep breathing and meditation can be helpful in lessening migraine attacks.

Some common migraine triggers include:

Hormone changes such as just before the menstrual period begins

Skipping meals

Not getting enough rest

Alcohol

Stress

Physical activity

Extreme heat

Certain smells

Certain foods, in particular those with additives, preservatives or dyes.

Bright lights

Weather changes

Medications

Motion sickness during road trips

Changes in routine

Options for teens with chronic migraines-
Conventional Treatment

Many popular drugs on the market today are not well tolerated by adults much less something a parent would want to subject their adolescent or vibrant young teen to. Dry mouth, fatigue, difficulty concentrating are just a few of the potential side-effects.

“Parents should be aware that our medication choices aren’t as good as they should be,” Dr. Jennifer Bickel, a neurologist and headache specialist at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri, told Genevra Pittman at Reuters Health.

There are not many medications for treating children’s migraines that are without major controversy, especially the class of medication known as Triptans. If you do your own research, you will see in journals where triptans (such as Children’s Imitrex) are being considered or even approved for children by the FDA, but you will find as many or more articles saying that triptans are in no way safe for children.

Prevention is key for children and teen who suffer chronic migraines-
Nutritional Alternative

Prevention of the migraine attack in the first place is, of course, far better than treating an attack once it’s happened. While there are prescription medications available, they can make symptoms worse by causing medication overuse headaches.

Natural treatments to prevent migraines are highly preferable, have no harmful side-effects and are very effective. Nutritional supplements and herbs such as the patented active ingredients in MigreLief; feverfew, magnesium and riboflavin are said to work by keeping the blood flowing properly in the brain. When the blood is flowing the way it should, this may prevent sudden spasms as well as decrease inflammation to prevent migraines.

We understand that as a parent, you want, not only to have your child’s pain relieved, but you also do not want them to have anything that would further harm them. That’s the beauty the “Triple Therapy Approach” of MigreLief. There are three well known prophylactic mechanisms of action listed in the American Academy of Neurology’s Evidence Based Guidelines for Migraine Prevention, working at the cellular level to solve the problem. (Magnesium, Riboflavin (B-2) and a proprietary form of the herb Feverfew-whole leaf and extract.

There are no negative side-effects associated with the ingredients in MigreLief or Children’s MigreLief (formulated for ages 2 -11.) With MigreLief, there also is no concern about drug interaction with most other medications a child might be taking.

Long term vs. temporary migraine relief… which would you prefer for your child?
By avoiding common triggers, staying well hydrated, and treating nutritionally, the devastating effects of migraines on teens can be decreased or even eliminated allowing adolescents to enjoy an improved quality of life that can positively affect their future for many years to come.

His migraines have always been complicated causing him to vomit, be sensitive to light and noise, and stay in a dark room until the pain was manageable. His neurologist recommended MigreLief. We are ecstatic. He is able to stay over with friends, play baseball, basketball, and skateboard again.” ~ H.S.

Your physician tells you that your Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is low (2.5 standard deviations below average and that you have osteoporosis) and he wants you to go on one of the prescription medications to prevent bone fractures. He or she goes on to tell you that these drugs have been found to reduce your risk of a fracture by 50%. Sounds impressive and necessary…so you get nervous. Just the image of an incapacitating hip fracture, is enough to make you rush out to fill a prescription for bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax, Boniva or Actonel. Aclasta, Aredia, Bondronat, Didronel, Reclast, Skelid and Zometa.

Being scared sometimes makes people do things too quickly without gathering all of the facts. Also over reliance on their doctors recommendation without independent research of their own, can sometimes lead to uninformed choices.

As you will learn shortly, these drugs can have some very serious side-effect and in addition, many experts are troubled by the quality of bone that these drugs create. In addition the 50% reduction in fracture risk quoted by the manufacturers of these drugs and some physicians, is at best misleading and at worst down right deceptive.

Let’s say that everyone had a 100% risk (a certainty, 100 out of 100 people would all have a fracture sometime after age 65). Then a drug that reduced that risk by half so that only 50 out of 100 people would have a fracture, might be a drug worth taking, assuming it was safe and wasn’t going to hurt you because of serious side-effects. This drug (if one existed, it doesn’t) could legitimately state it reduced fracture risk by 50%

What if your risk was only 2% of having a fracture sometime after age 65? In others words only 2 out of every hundred people will experience a fracture and 98 will never have one. Another way of saying this, is that if you take absolutely NOTHING, the odds are 98% in your favor of never having a fracture. Would you then be in a rush to use this or any other drug?

How do drug manufacturers play with the quoted efficacy percentages to fool you into thinking these drugs work much better than they really do?

Well, they do a study approved by the FDA and show that when you take their drug, instead of 2 people out of 100 people experiencing a fracture, only 1 person out of 100 people experienced a fracture. So they report the drop from 2 out of 100 to 1 out of 100 people as a 50% reduction in fracture rate. And to make matters worse, many physicians quote this misleading 50% drop in fracture rate to their patients.

Another way of putting this into perspective is that for every hundred people who take this drug, 98 of them didn’t need it, but it gets worse. The 98 who didn’t need but took it anyway are now exposed to, what in some cases, can be very serious side-effects.

In addition to the multiple, potential side-effects of these drugs which will be listed shortly, these drugs do not create new healthy bone, instead they create bone that is unnatural and nothing like new bone formed by the body.

Instead of the body’s normal process of breaking down old bone (known as resorption, which is carried out by cells called osteoclasts) and rebuilding new strong bone with other cells known as osteoblasts, these drugs stop the rebuilding of new bone by stopping resorption (turning off the osteoclast activity).

So people wind up with bone that is architecturally very different from new bone created by the body. This bone does allow for minerals to be absorbed which can quickly in the short term reduce fracture risk by the tiny absolute amount described above, but many researchers are concerned about the long-term wisdom of using these drugs to create this “unnatural type of bone”.

In fact, recent research has shown an increase in femur fractures in patients who have taken these drugs for 5 or more years. These drugs have demonstrated no benefit for primary prevention. This means that for men or women who may have below average BMD (bone mineral density) but whom are not diagnosed with osteoporosis, there is no reason to take these drugs, yet the drug companies and some physicians recommend them to these lower risk patients as well. It just doesn’t make sense.

So, In addition to not giving much absolute protection from fractures, you will also be exposed to the following side-effects, some of which, though low in risk, can be very serious and even life threatening:

•Ulcers of the esophagus

•Esosphageal cancer

•Upper GI irritation

•Irregular heartbeat

•Fractures of the femur

•Low calcium in the blood

•Skin rash

•Joint, bone, and muscle pain

•Jaw bone decay (osteonecrosis)

•Increased parathyroid hormone (PTH)

*Users of some of these drugs can develop osteonecrosis of the jaw which is associated with significant and death of jawbone tissue. The Journal of the American Dental Association reports that osteonecrosis is actually more common than initially thought.

**An article in the New England Journal of Medicine stated that 23 cases of esophageal cancer have been reported due to Fosamax. Then, in an issue of the American Dental Association, were reports that the drug’s jaw die off risk is actually more common than initially thought. The jaw bone die off is actually known as a disease.

*** As reported by the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research

Sensible, Effective and Much Safer Options to Reduce Your Fracture Risk

High dose calcium is NOT a needed or even sensible option, no matter what your doctor tells you.

Regarding Calcium and the ubiquitous advice given by so many healthcare professionals to consume anywhere from 1000-1500 mg. for bone health, it is just plain wrong and recent studies indicate that these high levels of calcium are potentially dangerous to your cardiovascular system. Increasing both calcification of arteries and MI risk.

The problem is not that most of us don’t get enough calcium but that the calcium we get doesn’t get absorbed efficiently into our bones. This calcium is then free and available to go deposit where we don’t want it, into the insides of our arteries, causing calcification which can lead to decreased arterial function, high blood pressure and cardio-vascular disease.

Cultures that consume far less than the 1500 mg of calcium per day recommended by many physicians, experience much lower fracture rates than we do. This is because their diets contain some specific ingredients that help calcium to enter their bones.

These two ingredients are Vitamin D and Vitamin K. In the proper amounts both of the simple vitamins have been shown to be incredibly safe and healthy for many reasons beyond just bone health, and can safely decrease fracture risk in susceptible people.

Two recent studies, one examining the fracture reducing potential of bisphosphonate drugs and the second measuring the fracture reducing potential of Vitamin D, demonstrated that Vitamin D is perhaps more effective than the drugs, with none of the inherent risks and side-effects of the drugs.

Interestingly, several studies have shown that both Vitamin K-1 and K-2 have decreased fracture risks in humans without increasing Bone Mineral Density (BMD).

I suggest that for normal healthy, men and women no more than 500-750 mg /day of calcium is necessary. If you have normal digestive function calcium carbonate is fine despite what certain advertisers state. If you do have digestive issues and perhaps are low in stomach acidity, then calcium citrate is a good choice.

Regarding the amounts of Vitamin D to take, I suggest that you start with 2500 IU per day. When you get your blood checked ask your physician to also measure you calcium levels. I believe optimum levels are between 50 ng/ml – 80 ng/ml.

As for the Vitamin K, though both form K-1 and K-2 have been shown to work, a product containing a combination of both K-1 and K-2 in the amounts of 1-2 mg (1000-2000 mcg) and 200 mcg respectively should be adequate.
